From Chugiak to Key West: The Ultimate RV Adventure Through my 15-Year-Old Eyes

RV The Worry-Free Way

Some road trips are planned down to the mile.
Others? They're thrown at you along with a set of RV keys, a paper map, a credit card, a calling card—and a new family to deliver safely across the continent.

I was 15 years old when I took the RV journey of a lifetime: from Chugiak, Alaska, all the way to Key West, Florida.

Yes, you read that right. Fifteen.

🚐 The Starting Line: Chugiak, Alaska

Born and raised in Alaska, adventure was already part of my DNA. But this? This was different. One day, my dad handed me everything I’d need—and a little more:

  • RV Keys
  • Paper Road Atlas (no GPS back then)
  • A Credit Card (for gas, if it worked)
  • A Prepaid Calling Card (remember those?)
  • His New Honduran Wife and Her Three Kids, ages 8, 7, and 5

And six unforgettable words:

"I'll meet you at Disney World in six weeks."

No pressure, right?

🗺️ The Great Unknown: Rolling Into America

I stared at that giant map and realized what lay ahead: crossing thousands of miles of wilderness, highways, and small towns—from the wild Alaskan frontier through Canada, down into the U.S. heartland, and finally to the sun-drenched shores of Florida.

There were no smartphones, no online reservations, no real-time traffic updates. Just instincts, a highlighter to mark the route, and a lot of luck.

👵 A Midway Stop — and a Major Breakdown

Part of the plan was to stop midway in St. Louis, Missouri to visit my grandmother and a few other family members from my father's side. It was going to be our chance to catch our breath, grab a home-cooked meal, and maybe even relax for a day or two.

But about 160 miles outside of St. Louis, the trip took a sharp turn.

The engine blew a rod straight through the oil pan.

Instantly, our trip went from "cross-country adventure" to "major mechanical crisis." Stranded on the side of a rural highway with three young kids and a totaled RV engine, I had to scramble to find a tow truck that could handle the size and weight of our rig—and one willing to go the long distance back to St. Louis.

It took two full days to find help.
And when I finally did?
The tow bill was a staggering $1,200—which, at 15 years old, I had to negotiate myself just to get it done and keep the journey alive.

🛡️ Why the Right Protection Products Matter

Looking back now, I can't help but think how much smoother—and less stressful—that disaster could have been if we had the right protection products that RVers have available today:

  • Comprehensive Roadside Assistance (for towing anywhere, at no or little cost)
  • Trip Interruption Coverage (to pay for hotels, meals, and alternate transportation while repairs are made)
  • Extended Mechanical Coverage (to cover major engine failures like ours)
  • 24/7 Emergency Support Lines (real humans, ready to help)

Today, RVers don't have to go it alone.
The right trip protection could save time, money, and sanity—three things I desperately needed on that dusty roadside in the middle of Missouri.

🌎 The Beauty of America, Mile by Mile

Despite the breakdown, the detours, and the challenges, we kept going.
We fixed what we could, learned as we went, and watched the country unfold around us: glaciers, plains, mountains, cities, beaches—and everything in between.

And after weeks of navigating the unknown, patching together repairs, and herding a gaggle of energetic kids across America, we finally rolled into Disney World—dusty, sunburned, and triumphant.

And yes—my dad was there, smiling like it had all gone exactly according to plan.

🏁 Final Thoughts: Adventure Changes You

That trip in part gave me the entrepreneur spirit and solutionary I am. It taught me grit, resourcefulness, resilience—and just how important it is to be prepared when you're living life on the road.

Would I recommend handing a 15-year-old an RV and a cross-country challenge today?
Probably not.
But I would recommend something else:
Pack your sense of humor. Protect your trip. Travel Worry-Free.

Because in RV life, as in life itself, it's not a matter of if you'll hit a bump—it's when.
And when you do, the right protection makes all the difference.
